Matt Taylor
I began playing ice hockey when my family moved to Chicago. My friends invited me to join them for the first time.
The experience playing ice hockey on that day changed my life forever! I started playing in the Homewood-Flossmoor Youth Hockey Association and continued through my junior year in high school.
My family moved to Memphis Tennessee midway through my high school junior year and started playing for the Memphis Eagles 18U AA travel hockey club in the southeastern division of USA Hockey.
During my 2 years of hockey with the Eagles, we traveled all over the country playing divisional games and tournaments.
These travel hockey years would fuel my personal development and my life.
After high school I moved to Houston Texas to start college and played in many different adult men’s league programs throughout the city. During those years in Texas I played on D4-D6 teams.
I moved to California a few years later and continued to play men’s leagues, pickup hockey, and roller hockey in San Diego.
When my son was old enough to start playing hockey, we signed him up in the LA Kings Learn to Play Hockey program in 2016.
I watched him and the other kids learning to play for the first time which prompted me to start volunteering with the Mites.
He played and I coached in Escondido at the Ice-Plex with the Penguin’s Mite Program from 2016-2018, and in the fall of 2019 we joined the SDIA Oilers.
My son and I are finishing our third season at SDIA in the Oilers Mite 8U program. I have volunteered on Mites 2 in 2019 & Mites 1 in 2020 with Coach Mike Langridge as his Assistant Coach.
In the fall of 2020 I started as Head Coach of the Mites 6 team. The 2020-2021 has been a blast and I look forward to the growth and development of each player in the 8U and beyond at SDIA!
